Ability (-ebilmek/-abilmek)

CEFR level: A2 · Topic: Verbs & Conjugation

The suffix -(y)ebil / -(y)abil (from the verb bilmek) expresses ability ("can, be able to") and also possibility or permission ("may, might"). It is written as one word with the verb.

Formation

Verb stem + -e/-a (buffer y after vowels) + bil + tense + personal ending. Because bil- takes the aorist -ir, the "can" form is always -ebilir / -abilir.

  • yap- → yapabilmek (to be able to do)
  • gel- → gelebilmek (to be able to come)
  • oku- → okuyabilmek (to be able to read)
  • git- → gidebilmek, et- → edebilmek (t → d before a vowel)
  • ye- → yiyebilmek, de- → diyebilmek (irregular)

Ability vs. Not Being Able: Four Forms to Know

FormStructureMeaning
yapabilirimyap-abil-ir-imI can do it / I may do it
yapamamyap-ama-mI can't do it
yapmayabilirimyap-ma-yabil-ir-imI might not do it
yapamayabilirimyap-ama-yabil-ir-imI might not be able to do it

The negative of ability is not made with bil. Instead, -(y)eme / -(y)ama is added directly to the stem: yapamam, gelemedim, okuyamayacak. Yapmayabilirim is the possibility of not doing something, and yapamayabilirim is the possibility of not being able to.
