Compound Nouns (İsim Tamlamaları)
Compound nouns (İsim Tamlamaları) are phrases formed by two or more nouns to express a relationship, typically possession, type, or material. Turkish has distinct structures for these compounds.
1. Definite Compound Noun (Belirtili İsim Tamlaması):
This type specifies a definite possessor and a definite possessed item ("the X of the Y" or "the Y's X").
Structure: Possessor Noun + Genitive Suffix (-in) + Possessed Noun + 3rd Person Possessive Suffix (-i/ı/u/ü or -si/sı/su/sü)
- evin kapısı (the door of the house)
- okulun müdürü (the school's director)
- Ali'nin arabası (Ali's car)
2. Indefinite Compound Noun (Belirtisiz İsim Tamlaması):
This type describes a general category, type, or an unspecified possessive relationship ("an X of Y" or "Y X" where Y specifies the type of X).
Structure: Possessor/Qualifier Noun (No Suffix) + Possessed/Specified Noun + 3rd Person Possessive Suffix (-i/ı/u/ü or -si/sı/su/sü)
- okul müdürü (a school director / school principal - type of director)
- masa örtüsü (a tablecloth - type of cover)
- Türk kahvesi (Turkish coffee - type of coffee)
- çocuk ayakkabısı (children's shoe(s) - type of shoe)
3. Unprefixed Compound Noun (Takısız İsim Tamlaması):
This type indicates what something is made of or its inherent, defining quality. Neither noun takes a suffix.
Structure: Material/Qualifier Noun (No Suffix) + Item Noun (No Suffix)
- altın yüzük (gold ring - a ring made of gold)
- taş duvar (stone wall)
- demir kapı (iron door)
- tahta kaşık (wooden spoon)
Buffer consonants and vowel/consonant harmony rules apply as usual for the suffixes involved.
