How to Tell the Time in Turkish: The Complete Guide with Examples

June 23, 2026 FluenTurk Team

"Saat Kaç?" - What time is it?

Before you learn to tell the time, you need to know how to ask for it. The standard question is "Saat kaç?" (Literally: Hour how many?). If you want to ask "At what time?" an event is happening, you ask "Saat kaçta?" (At hour how many?).

Full Hours and Half Hours

Telling the time exactly on the hour or half-hour is very straightforward.

  • Saat üç. (It is three o'clock. / 3:00)
  • Saat beş. (It is five o'clock. / 5:00)

For half-hours, use the word buçuk (half).

  • Saat üç buçuk. (It is half past three. / 3:30)
  • Saat yedi buçuk. (It is half past seven. / 7:30)

Exception: For 12:30 (half past twelve), you can just say Yarım (Half).

The "Geçiyor" Rule: Minutes Past the Hour (1 to 29 minutes)

To say "X minutes past Y", the structure translates literally to "It is passing Y by X".

Rule: The Hour takes the Accusative case (-i / -ı / -u / -ü) + The Minutes + geçiyor.

  • 3:10 -> Saat üçü on geçiyor. (Three takes -ü, then ten, then passing. Literal: It is passing the three by ten.)
  • 5:20 -> Saat beşi yirmi geçiyor. (It is twenty past five.)
  • 7:15 -> Saat yediyi çeyrek geçiyor. (Quarter is "çeyrek". It is a quarter past seven.)

The "Var" Rule: Minutes To the Hour (31 to 59 minutes)

When the minute hand crosses the 30-minute mark, we start looking ahead to the NEXT hour. The structure translates literally to "There is X to Y".

Rule: The NEXT Hour takes the Dative case (-e / -a) + The Minutes left + var.

  • 3:50 -> Saat dörde on var. (We look at 4. Four takes -e, then ten, then existent. Literal: There is ten to four.)
  • 5:40 -> Saat altıya yirmi var. (There is twenty to six.)
  • 7:45 -> Saat sekize çeyrek var. (There is a quarter to eight.)

⚠️ Critical Distinction: State vs. Action

The rules above are used when someone asks "What time is it right now?". But if you are describing AT what time an action happens, the endings change!

Instead of geçiyor, use geçe. Instead of var, use kala.

  • What time is it? Saat beşi çeyrek geçiyor. (It is 5:15)
  • When does the train leave? Tren beşi çeyrek geçe kalkıyor. (The train leaves AT 5:15)
  • When does the movie start? Film sekize on kala başlıyor. (The movie starts AT ten to eight)

AM / PM in Turkey

In spoken Turkish, a 12-hour clock is usually used. Context makes it clear, but if you need to be specific, add the time of day before the hour:

  • Sabah (Morning): Sabah sekiz (8:00 AM)
  • Öğle (Noon): Öğlen on iki (12:00 PM)
  • Öğleden sonra (Afternoon): Öğleden sonra üç (3:00 PM)
  • Akşam (Evening): Akşam yedi (7:00 PM)
  • Gece (Night): Gece on bir (11:00 PM)

Note: Official schedules (flights, buses, television) always use the 24-hour clock (e.g., "Saat yirmi on beş" for 20:15).
