Ordering Like a Local at a Turkish Restaurant, Meyhane, and Çay Bahçesi
Eating Out in Turkey: An Art Form
Dining in Turkey is never just about consuming food; it is a lively social ritual. Whether you are grabbing a quick lahmacun at an esnaf lokantası (tradesman restaurant), enjoying a seaside çay bahçesi (tea garden), or dining at a traditional meyhane (tavern), knowing how to order like a local will earn you warmer service, better recommendations, and genuine smiles.
1. Arriving & Getting Seated
- "İki kişilik yeriniz var mı?" ➔ Do you have a table for two?
- "Dışarıda / Bahçede oturabilir miyiz?" ➔ Can we sit outside / in the garden?
- "Menüyü görebilir miyiz?" ➔ Could we see the menu?
2. How to Call the Waiter Politely
Never snap your fingers or yell "Garson!". The standard, respectful Turkish way to catch a server's attention is a gentle hand wave accompanied by:
🗣️ The Golden Phrase: "Bakar mısınız?"
Literally translates to: "Would you look here?". It is polite, respectful, and used by every native speaker.
3. Ordering Food & Special Dietary Preferences
- "Sipariş verebilir miyiz?" ➔ Can we order?
- "Günün çorbası ne?" ➔ What is the soup of the day?
- "Ne tavsiye edersiniz?" ➔ What do you recommend?
- "Acısız olsun lütfen." ➔ Please make it non-spicy.
- "Az acılı olsun." ➔ Mildly spicy, please.
- "Et yemiyorum, vejetaryenim." ➔ I don't eat meat, I am vegetarian.
- "İçinde domuz eti var mı?" ➔ Does this contain pork? (Pork is virtually absent in Turkish cuisine, but good to know).
4. The Meyhane & Meze Ritual
At a traditional Meyhane, the waiter will bring out a large tray (Meze tepsisi) laden with cold appetizers. You choose directly with your eyes:
- "Soğuk mezelerden seçmek istiyoruz." ➔ We would like to select from the cold mezes.
- "Bir porsiyon haydari, bir porsiyon şakşuka ve atom alalım." ➔ We'll take one portion of haydari, one shakshuka, and atom.
- "Şerefe!" ➔ Cheers! / To honor!
- "Afiyet olsun!" ➔ Bon appétit!
5. Ordering Turkish Coffee (Kahve Siparişi)
When you order Turkish coffee, the waiter will immediately ask: "Nasıl olsun?" (How would you like it?). Sugar must be added before brewing:
- Sade: Plain / Zero sugar
- Az şekerli: A little sugar (half a cube)
- Orta: Medium sugar (one cube — the most popular!)
- Şekerli: Sweet (two cubes)
6. Asking for the Bill (Hesap)
- "Hesabı alabilir miyiz?" ➔ Could we have the bill?
- "Kredi kartı geçiyor mu?" ➔ Do you accept credit cards?
- "Ayrı ayrı ödeyebilir miyiz?" ➔ Can we pay separately?
- "Üstü kalsın." ➔ Keep the change.
- "Elinize sağlık!" ➔ "Health to your hands!" (Say this to the chef or server when leaving to compliment the food!).
