"Sen" vs. "Siz": How to Be Polite in Turkish Without Being Awkward

June 20, 2026 FluenTurk Team

The Two Faces of "You"

In English, we use "you" for everyone—from our best friend to the President. In Turkish, like many other European languages, there is a strict divide between the informal, singular "you" (Sen) and the formal or plural "you" (Siz). Getting this wrong can make you sound overly cold, awkwardly intimate, or even downright rude.

When to Use "Sen" (The Informal You)

Sen is reserved for people you have a close, established relationship with, or those who are clearly younger than you.

  • Close Friends and Family: You will always use sen with your parents, siblings, cousins, and close friends.
  • Children and Teenagers: If you are an adult, you will naturally use sen when speaking to children or teenagers, even if you don't know them.
  • Animals and Pets: We always address animals with sen.
  • God/The Divine: Interestingly, in prayers, God is addressed with sen to signify an intimate spiritual connection, not distance.

When to Use "Siz" (The Formal/Plural You)

Siz wears two hats: it is the plural "you" (addressing more than one person, regardless of intimacy) AND the formal, respectful singular "you".

  • Strangers and Acquaintances: When asking for directions, talking to a shopkeeper, a waiter, or someone you just met, always default to siz.
  • Elders: Respect for age is paramount in Turkish culture. Always use siz with anyone significantly older than you, unless they explicitly tell you otherwise.
  • Professional Settings: In the workplace, use siz with your boss, clients, and colleagues (until a closer friendship forms).
  • Plural: If you are addressing two or more of your best friends, you still must use siz (or sizler) because there is more than one person.

The Social Dance: Moving from Siz to Sen

How do you know when it's safe to switch from formal to informal? This is a delicate social dance.

Usually, the older or more senior person will initiate the switch. They might say, "Bana sen diyebilirsin" (You can say 'sen' to me) or "Lütfen senli benli olalım" (Let's be on 'sen' and 'ben' terms). If you are the younger person, it is safer to wait for this invitation.

💡 Pro Tip: When in Doubt, Pluralize!

If you are completely unsure whether to use sen or siz, always default to siz. It is much better to be viewed as overly polite than disrespectful.

Verbs and Suffixes Follow the Pronoun

Remember that you don't just change the pronoun; the verb ending must change too!

  • Sen nasılsın? (How are you? - Informal)
  • Siz nasılsınız? (How are you? - Formal/Plural)
  • Nereye gidiyorsun? (Where are you going? - Informal)
  • Nereye gidiyorsunuz? (Where are you going? - Formal/Plural)

Mastering this distinction is one of the fastest ways to sound culturally fluent and earn the respect of native speakers!
