Healthcare in Turkey: What You Need to Know First

Turkey has an exceptionally high standard of medical care and a widespread pharmacy system. However, when you are running a fever or experiencing sudden pain, trying to explain yourself in broken English can be stressful.

Turkish pharmacists (Eczacı) are highly trained medical professionals who can recommend and dispense many over-the-counter remedies directly without an initial doctor visit.

1. The Magical Word: "Nöbetçi Eczane" (On-Duty Pharmacy)

Standard pharmacies in Turkey are open Monday through Saturday from 09:00 to 19:00 and closed on Sundays.

🏥 How Night & Weekend Pharmacies Work:

Every neighborhood assigns a rotating Nöbetçi Eczane that stays open 24/7. Every closed pharmacy will have a lighted sign in the window displaying the name, address, and phone number of the nearest on-duty pharmacy!

2. Describing Symptoms (Semptomlar ve Ağrılar)

In Turkish, describing physical pain uses the possessive suffix + ağrıyor (aches) or var (there is):

Başım ağrıyor: I have a headache (My head aches)
Boğazım ağrıyor: I have a sore throat
Karnım / Midem ağrıyor: My stomach hurts
Midem bulanıyor: I feel nauseous
Ateşim var: I have a fever
Öksürüğüm var: I have a cough
Burnum akıyor: I have a runny nose
Başım dönüyor: I feel dizzy

3. Common Over-the-Counter Requests at the Eczane

  • "Ağrı kesici var mı?" ➔ Do you have a painkiller?
  • "Boğaz pastili istiyorum." ➔ I would like throat lozenges.
  • "Mide yanması için bir ilaç alabilir miyim?" ➔ Can I get something for heartburn / stomach acid?
  • "Grip ve soğuk algınlığı için ne önerirsiniz?" ➔ What do you recommend for flu and the common cold?
  • "Yara bandı ve dezenfektan lütfen." ➔ Band-aids and disinfectant, please.
  • "Günde kaç defa almalıyım?" ➔ How many times a day should I take this?
  • "Tok karnına mı, aç karnına mı?" ➔ On a full stomach or an empty stomach? (Crucial instruction!)

4. Expressing Allergies & Medical Conditions

  • Penisiline alerjim var: I am allergic to penicillin.
  • Aspirine alerjim var: I am allergic to aspirin.
  • Şeker hastasıyım (Diyabet): I am diabetic.
  • Tansiyon hastasıyım: I have high blood pressure.
  • Hamileyim: I am pregnant.

5. Hospital & Emergency Phrases

  • 🚑 Ambulans çağırın! ➔ Call an ambulance! (Emergency phone: 112)
  • Acil servis nerede? ➔ Where is the emergency room?
  • Muayene olmak istiyorum: ➔ I would like to see a doctor / be examined.
  • Randevum var: ➔ I have an appointment.
  • Reçete: ➔ Prescription.
  • "Geçmiş olsun!" ➔ "Get well soon!" (The standard compassionate phrase you will hear constantly).

Many of these phrases use possessive suffixes (başım, boğazım, karnım). If those feel unfamiliar, check our complete possessives masterclass and our polite phrases guide for more cultural expressions like Geçmiş olsun.
