Turkish for Taxis, Dolmuş & Public Transport: Phrases That Save You Time and Money
Mastering the Transit Puzzle in Turkey
Turkey boasts some of the most efficient and diverse public transportation systems in the world—from modern subway lines, scenic ferryboats (vapur), and Marmaray undersea trains, to the quintessential Turkish invention: the Dolmuş (yellow or turquoise shared minibus).
Knowing the right phrases ensures you never miss a stop or get overcharged on a taxi ride.
1. The Istanbulkart & Public Metro / Tram Essentials
- "İstanbulkart nerede satılıyor?" ➔ Where is the Istanbulkart sold?
- "Kartıma para / bakiye yüklemek istiyorum." ➔ I want to load money/balance onto my card.
- "Bu tren Taksim'e gider mi?" ➔ Does this train go to Taksim?
- "Hangi durakta inmem gerekiyor?" ➔ At which stop do I need to get off?
- "Aktarma var mı?" ➔ Is there a transfer?
- "Son metro saat kaçta?" ➔ What time is the last metro?
2. The Legendary Dolmuş: Etiquette & Unwritten Rules
The Dolmuş (literally "stuffed / filled") is a shared minibus that runs fixed routes. You pay cash to the driver while the vehicle is in motion!
How the Dolmuş Money Relay Works:
If you sit in the back, hand your coins/cash to the passenger in front of you and say your destination. The passengers will pass it all the way to the driver and return your exact change back across the bus!
Passing money forward: "Bir kişi Beşiktaş uzatır mısınız?" (Could you pass one person to Beşiktaş?)
For two passengers: "İki kişi Kadıköy, bir de öğrenci." (Two people to Kadıköy, one of them a student.)
How to Request to Get Off the Dolmuş
There are no stop buttons in a Dolmuş. When your destination approaches, call out clearly to the driver:
- "Müsait bir yerde inecek var!" ➔ "Someone wants to get off at a suitable spot!" (The #1 universal phrase).
- "Kaptan, sağda bırakır mısın?" ➔ "Captain, could you drop me off on the right?"
- "Işıklarda ineceğim." ➔ "I will get off at the traffic lights."
3. Taking Yellow Taxis (Taksi) Without Stress
- "Taksimetreyi açar mısınız lütfen?" ➔ Could you turn on the taximeter, please?
- "Sultanahmet'e gitmek istiyorum, ne kadar tutar?" ➔ I want to go to Sultanahmet, approximately how much will it cost?
- "Buradan sağa / sola dönün." ➔ Turn right / left from here.
- "Düz devam edin." ➔ Continue straight ahead.
- "Burada durabilirsiniz." ➔ You can stop here.
- "Fiş alabilir miyim?" ➔ May I have a receipt?
- "Kredi kartı kabul ediyor musunuz?" ➔ Do you accept credit cards? (Always ask before getting in!).
4. On the Ferry (Vapur Keyfi)
Taking the ferry across the Bosphorus between Europe and Asia is the quintessential Istanbul experience. Don't forget to buy a fresh sesame bagel (simit) from the dock to share with the following seagulls!
- "İskele nerede?" ➔ Where is the ferry dock/pier?
- "Kadıköy vapuru hangi iskeleden kalkıyor?" ➔ From which pier does the Kadıköy ferry depart?
- "Bir çay alabilir miyim?" ➔ Can I get a cup of tea?
