Basic Adjectives
Adjectives (sıfatlar) are words that describe or modify nouns. They provide more information about the qualities or characteristics of a noun.
Placement:
In Turkish, adjectives almost always come before the noun they modify.
No Agreement:
A key feature of Turkish adjectives is that they do not change form to agree with the noun in gender, number, or case. This makes them simpler to use than in many other languages. The noun itself will change, but the adjective remains the same.
- Example: güzel ev (beautiful house)
- Example: güzel evler (beautiful houses - only "ev" becomes plural)
- Example: güzel evi gördüm (I saw the beautiful house - "evi" is accusative, "güzel" is unchanged)
Common Adjectives:
- büyük (big) - küçük (small)
- iyi (good) - kötü (bad)
- yeni (new) - eski (old)
- kırmızı (red), mavi (blue), sarı (yellow), yeşil (green)
- hızlı (fast) - yavaş (slow)
- genç (young) - yaşlı (old - for people)
- uzun (long/tall) - kısa (short)
- zor (difficult) - kolay (easy)
