Key Vocabulary
Grammar & Culture Notes
Grammar
'Was' in Turkish: -DI
Soğuktu (it was cold), vardı (there was) and evdeydim (I was at home) all use the past ending -dı/-di/-du/-dü (-tı/-ti… after hard consonants such as k). After a vowel a y is added: ev-de-y-dim.
Grammar
Let's: -(y)AlIm
Yürüyelim mi? (Shall we walk?) and Gidelim! (Let's go!) use the 'let's' ending -(y)elim/-(y)alım. Add mi to turn it into a suggestion.
Grammar
değil mi?
…, değil mi? at the end of a sentence works like English 'isn't it?', 'aren't you?' or 'didn't you?' — and it never changes form.
