Grammar

Present Simple / Aorist (-r)

The Present Simple Tense, also known as the Aorist Tense (Geniş Zaman), is used to express habitual actions, general truths, facts, polite requests, and sometimes future plans.

Suffix Formation:

The main suffix is -r, but it changes based on the verb stem:

  • Verb stems ending in a vowel: Add -r.
Example: oku- (read) → okur (reads)
  • Most polysyllabic verb stems ending in a consonant: Add -ir / -ır / -ur / -ür (I-Type vowel harmony).
Example: gönder- (send) → gönderir (sends); çalış- (work) → çalışır (works)
  • Most monosyllabic verb stems ending in a consonant: Add -ar / -er (A-Type vowel harmony).
Example: yap- (do) → yapar (does); sev- (love) → sever (loves)
  • Irregular monosyllabic verbs: Some monosyllabic verbs take -ir/-ır/-ur/-ür (e.g., gelir, alır, verir, görür, olur, ölür, durur, bulur, kalır, sanır, varır, vurur, bilir). There are about 13 of these.
