Grammar & Culture Notes
Culture
Sen or siz?
Ali and Ayşe are young people meeting informally, so they use sen (informal 'you') throughout: Nasılsın? Nerelisin? With strangers, older people or in formal situations, use siz: Nasılsınız? Nerelisiniz? Pick one and stay with it during a conversation.
Grammar
-lI: where someone is from
Add -lı/-li/-lu/-lü to a place name to say where someone is from: Ankaralı, İzmirli, İstanbullu, Konyalı. The vowel follows vowel harmony with the last vowel of the place name.
Grammar
'I am' is a suffix
Turkish has no separate word for 'am/are'. A personal ending goes on the noun or adjective: öğrenci-yim (I'm a student), öğretmen-im (I'm a teacher), iyi-yim (I'm fine). A buffer y is added after a vowel.
