Grammar & Culture Notes

  • Culture

    Bey and Hanım

Turkish puts Bey (Mr.) or Hanım (Ms.) after the first name: John Bey, Ayşe Hanım. It is polite and very common at hotels, offices and shops.

  • Grammar

    From … to …

Yediden ona kadar = from seven to ten. The ablative -den/-dan marks the start and -e/-a kadar the end. Note yedi → yediden and on → ona.

  • Grammar

    Polite past: vardı

Bir rezervasyonum vardı is literally 'I had a reservation', but it means 'I have a reservation'. The past form makes the statement softer and more polite. You'll hear the same in Adınız neydi? (What was your name?).
