Grammar & Culture Notes

  • Grammar

    Invitations and suggestions

Gelmek ister misin? (Would you like to come?) is a friendly invitation. Yiyelim mi? (Shall we eat?) and buluşalım (let's meet) use the 'let's' form -(y)elim/-(y)alım.

  • Grammar

-ki: the cafe in front of the theater

Sinemanın önündeki kafe = 'the cafe (that is) in front of the movie theater'. -ki turns a place expression (önünde, in front of it) into an adjective. Compare evdeki (the one at home) and dünkü (yesterday's).

  • Grammar

    Days of the week

Days of the week are written with a lowercase letter in Turkish — cumartesi, pazar, cuma günü — unless they start a sentence or are part of a full date.
