Grammar & Culture Notes

  • Culture

    Hoş geldin — Hoş bulduk

When someone comes back from a trip or arrives at your home, say Hoş geldin / Hoş geldiniz. The fixed reply is Hoş bulduk — literally 'we found it pleasant'. Even a single person says bulduk.

  • Grammar

    The past tense -DI

Demir tells his story in the simple past: gittim (I went), yüzdüm (I swam), gezdim, çektim. With nouns and adjectives the same ending means 'was': harikaydı (it was great), güneşliydi (it was sunny).

  • Grammar

    Promises with the aorist

Sana gösteririm (I'll show you) uses the aorist, not the future tense. Turkish often uses the aorist for offers and promises: Ben yaparım (I'll do it), Seni ararım (I'll call you).
