Grammar & Culture Notes
Grammar
Liking activities
Spor yapmayı seviyorum (I love working out): sevmek takes the accusative, so the infinitive becomes yapma-yı. Hoşlanmak takes the ablative: yapmak-tan hoşlanmak. Learn each verb together with its case.
Grammar
How long? -DIr with the present continuous
Ne zamandır gitar çalıyorsun? — Turkish uses the present continuous for something that started in the past and is still going on, where English says 'have been playing'. Answer with -dır/-dir: iki yıldır (for two years).
Grammar
Should: -mAlI
Çalmalısın (you should play) uses the necessitative -malı/-meli plus a personal ending. Between friends it works as a warm, enthusiastic suggestion.
