Grammar & Culture Notes
Culture
Shoes off, slippers on
In most Turkish homes guests take their shoes off at the door, and hosts offer terlik (slippers). It's polite to bring a small gift — chocolates, sweets or flowers — and the host usually protests Hiç gerek yoktu! ('There was no need!').
Grammar
First impressions with -mIş
Evin çok güzelmiş! — Yusuf is seeing the place for the first time, so he adds -mış/-miş to express a new discovery or pleasant surprise, rather than just saying güzel.
Grammar
Shall I…? -(y)AyIm mı?
Çıkarayım mı? (Shall I take them off?) — the 'let me' form plus mı asks for permission or offers to do something: Yardım edeyim mi? (Shall I help?).
