Grammar & Culture Notes

  • Culture

    Eline sağlık

Turks thank the cook with Eline sağlık ('health to your hand'), or Ellerinize sağlık to someone you address as siz. The cook replies Afiyet olsun ('enjoy your meal'). Saying nothing after a home-cooked meal can seem rude.

  • Grammar

    olmuş: how something turned out

Çorba harika olmuş! uses -mış because Aylin is commenting on a result she has just discovered by tasting: 'the soup has turned out great'. You'll hear it at every Turkish table: Çok güzel olmuş!

  • Grammar

    Confident guesses with -DIr

Eminim o da çok güzeldir — after an adjective, -dır/-dir often expresses a confident guess: 'I'm sure it's lovely too'. Note also sütlaç → sütlacı (ç → c before a vowel).
