The Dialogue

  1. Gamze

İklim değişikliği konusunda bireysel çabaların ne kadar etkili olduğunu bazen sorguluyorum. Plastik pipet kullanmamak güzel ama asıl sorun büyük şirketlerin karbon salımı değil mi?

Sometimes I question how effective individual efforts really are against climate change. Not using plastic straws is nice, but isn't the real problem big companies' carbon emissions?

  2. Tarkan

Haklısın, sorumluluğun büyük kısmı sanayide ve şirket politikalarında. Ancak bireysel bilincin yaratacağı toplumsal baskıyı da küçümsememek gerekir.

You're right, most of the responsibility lies with industry and corporate policy. But we shouldn't underestimate the social pressure that individual awareness can create.

  3. Gamze

Yani milyonlarca insan sürdürülebilir ürünler talep ederse şirketler de üretim modellerini değiştirmek zorunda kalır diyorsun.

So you're saying that if millions of people demand sustainable products, companies will be forced to change how they produce things.

  4. Tarkan

Aynen öyle. Bireysel eylemler daha büyük bir değişimin başlangıç noktası olabilir. Tüketici olarak yaptığımız her seçim aslında bir oy gibidir.

Exactly. Individual actions can be the starting point for bigger change. Every choice we make as consumers is really like a vote.

  5. Gamze

Bu bakış açısını sevdim. Yine de sistemik bir değişiklik olmadan kalıcı bir çözümün mümkün olduğunu düşünmüyorum.

I like that way of looking at it. Still, I don't think a lasting solution is possible without systemic change.

  6. Tarkan

Orası kesin. Hükûmetlerin bağlayıcı hedefler koyması ve bunları denetlemesi şart.

That's for sure. Governments have to set binding targets and enforce them.

  7. Gamze

O zaman ikisi birlikte olmalı: Bireysel çabalarla sistemik değişim el ele gitmeli.

So it has to be both: individual effort and systemic change have to go hand in hand.

  8. Tarkan

Kesinlikle. Biri olmadan diğeri yetersiz kalır.

Absolutely. One without the other isn't enough.

Grammar & Culture Notes

  • Grammar

    Reporting with diyorsun

…zorunda kalır diyorsun = 'you're saying that … will be forced'. Turkish often reports speech by putting the whole quoted sentence before diyor(sun), without changing its tense.

  • Grammar

    Without: olmadan

Sistemik bir değişiklik olmadan = 'without systemic change'. -madan/-meden after a verb stem means 'without doing' (or 'before doing').

  • Grammar

    Word choice: salım, not salınım

The correct term for emissions is karbon salımı; salınım means 'oscillation'. The two are often confused, even in the media, so it's worth knowing the difference.
