The Dialogue

  1. Ayla

“Saatleri Ayarlama Enstitüsü”nü okudun mu? Geçen ay bitirdim ve hâlâ üzerine düşünüyorum.

Have you read The Time Regulation Institute? I finished it last month and I'm still thinking about it.

  2. Berk

Evet, okudum.

Yes, I have. It's no accident that it's considered one of the greatest works of Turkish literature. Tanpınar's irony is incredible.

  3. Ayla

Kesinlikle.

Absolutely. The novel isn't just the absurd story of an institution; it's also an allegory of Turkish society caught between East and West. Tanpınar reflects that dilemma brilliantly through the character of Hayri İrdal.

  4. Berk

For me, the novel's greatest strength is the way it makes you question the very idea of time. The tension between longing for the past and the sense of rupture that modernization brought is handled very skillfully.

  5. Ayla

Dili biraz ağır olmasına rağmen okumaya kesinlikle değer. Her okuduğumda farklı bir katmanını keşfediyorum.

Although the language is a bit heavy, it's definitely worth reading. Every time I read it, I discover a new layer.

  6. Berk

That's exactly what makes a great work of literature: it offers you a new perspective and keeps you asking questions.

  7. Ayla

İngilizce çevirisi de var, değil mi? Yabancı arkadaşlarıma önermek istiyorum.

There's an English translation too, isn't there? I want to recommend it to my foreign friends.

  8. Berk

Evet, Penguin Classics'ten çıktı. Bence onlar da çok sevecektir.

Yes, Penguin Classics published it. I'm sure they'll love it too.
