The Dialogue

Read each Turkish line aloud, then check the English. Hide the translation to test yourself.

  1. İpek

Yaz tatili için İtalya'ya gitmeyi planlıyoruz. Sence nereleri görmeliyiz?

We're planning to go to Italy for our summer vacation. Where do you think we should go?

  2. Tuna

Harika bir seçim! Ne kadar vaktiniz olacak?

Great choice! How much time will you have?

  3. İpek

    Yaklaşık on günümüz var.

    We have about ten days.

  4. Tuna

O zaman Roma, Floransa ve Venedik'i kapsayan bir rota yapabilirsiniz. Roma'ya en az üç gün ayırmalısınız. Kolezyum'u ve Vatikan'ı mutlaka görün.

Then you could plan a route covering Rome, Florence and Venice. You should set aside at least three days for Rome. Make sure you see the Colosseum and the Vatican.

  5. İpek

Peki, şehirler arasında neyle gidelim? Tren mi daha mantıklı, araba kiralamak mı?

And how should we get between cities? Is the train more sensible, or renting a car?

  6. Tuna

Şehirler arasında hızlı trenler çok pratik. Araba kiralamak ise büyük şehirlerin merkezlerinde park sorunu yüzünden zor olabilir.

The high-speed trains between cities are very convenient. Renting a car, on the other hand, can be a hassle because of parking in big city centers.

  7. İpek

Anladım. Konaklama için ne tavsiye edersin?

Got it. What would you recommend for accommodations?

  8. Tuna

Şehir merkezine yakın, tren istasyonuna yürüme mesafesinde olan yerleri tercih edin. Böylece çok zaman kazanırsınız.

Choose places close to the center, within walking distance of the station. That way you'll save a lot of time.

  9. İpek

    Vize için ne zaman başvurmalıyız?

When should we apply for the visa?

  10. Tuna

Hemen! Schengen vizesi için randevu bulmak bazen haftalar sürüyor.

Right away! Getting an appointment for a Schengen visa can sometimes take weeks.

Grammar & Culture Notes

  • Grammar

    Advice: -mAlIsInIz

Ayırmalısınız (you should set aside) uses the necessitative -malı/-meli for advice. The imperative görün (see!) is stronger: 'make sure you see'.

  • Grammar

    Because of: yüzünden, sayesinde, nedeniyle

Park sorunu yüzünden = 'because of the parking problem'. Yüzünden is mostly used for negative causes, sayesinde for positive ones ('thanks to'), and nedeniyle is neutral and more formal.

  • Culture

    Schengen visas

Most Turkish citizens need a Schengen visa to visit Italy and other EU countries, and appointment slots can be hard to find in peak season — so visa talk is a normal part of vacation planning in Turkey.
