Grammar & Culture Notes

  • Grammar

    Official-sounding passive

Customer-service Turkish loves the impersonal passive plus -dır: dönüş yapılacaktır ('you will be contacted'). The -dır makes it sound official. In everyday speech you'd just say sizi arayacağız (we'll call you).

  • Grammar

Doing one thing then another: -Ip

Kapatıp açmak = 'to turn off and (then) on'. The converb -ıp/-ip/-up/-üp links two actions that share the same subject and tense.

  • Culture

    Helpline phrases

Efendim is a polite 'sir/ma'am' used for both men and women. On any Turkish helpline expect phrases like arıza kaydı (support ticket), kayıt numarası (reference number) and en kısa sürede (as soon as possible).
